Project SAFE

Are you feeling powerless? Does this sound familiar?

"You never listen to me!"
"You don't understand!"
"It's my life!"
"Leave me alone!"

Cocoon Project SAFE is a unique teen homelessness prevention program which strengthens families through improved parental functioning and family management skills of parents with teens at high risk of homelessness. Services for parents include phone consultation and in-home family counseling with a Master's-level therapst, psycho-educational parenting classes for parents, facilitated parent support groups, WayOUT seninars for parents and teens, targeted outreach to the Latino community, and strong evaluation components. The goal is to ultimately prevent youth from leaving the home and to keep families intact and youth off the streets and out of harm's way.

Phone Consultation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cocoon Project SAFE's phone line helps parents through a 90-minute phone consultation. Parents can access this in-depth phone service anonymously from their home. Project SAFE will help you develop an action plan that confronts issues that may be underlying your teen's symptomatic behavior and identifies other community resources that may be beneficial. Cocoon Project SAFE is designed to help parents and guardians to delve beyond their child's destructive behavior patterns to expose the nature of what may be causing the behavior. The therapist will even follow up with you to review the action plan created in the initial phone consultation and discuss ways to confront barriers that may come up.

Educational Groups

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cocoon Project SAFE also offers educational parenting groups in multiple three-week series sessions, as well as through stand-alone classes. Project SAFE has developed this full curriculum to help parents and guardians build a better understanding of teen development and learn strategies for working with their teens. Examples of course titles are: "What's going on in my teen's brain?" "Handling Today with Your Teen," and "Your Teen's Quest for Identity." Educational groups are offered in Everett and Arlington and childcare is provided when necessary. Class size is limited, so please call in advance.

Programs for Parents

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In response to the growing number of parents seeking assistance with their teens, Cocoon House responded to this critical need by developing what has become a nationally recognized teen homelessness prevention program called Cocoon Project SAFE.

Having no where to turn, many parents are ready to drop their teen off at a Cocoon Shelter because they feel they have no alternative and little hope of improving the relationship with their teen. Cocoon Project SAFE offers parents and guardians tools and support to more effectively parent their teen.
