A PLACE TO BELONG

Alex first came to Cocoon House during a period of extreme cold, initially staying at our cold weather shelter before transitioning to Cocoon House East. While Alex had identified their grandmother as a safe housing option, ongoing conflict within the household made it difficult to return home right away.

During their stay at East, our team worked with Alex to initiate a Family Engagement referral, focused on strengthening relationships and addressing conflict within the home. When Alex exited shelter, they returned to live with their grandmother with continued care in place.

At an aftercare check-in, Alex shared that they are actively participating in family counseling with their grandmother and continuing to build a more stable and supportive home environment.

When Maya came to Cocoon House, she was living in a place not meant for habitation, separated from her children, and navigating serious health and mental health challenges.

But Maya was determined. She came in knowing her goals — to regain custody of her kids, secure stable housing, and access the support she needed to move forward. With guidance from Cocoon House staff, including help with documents and short-term shelter, Maya took the lead in rebuilding her life.

Within just a few weeks, Maya secured her own apartment, reunited with her children, and began her journey toward long-term stability.

Diego had been connected to Cocoon House programs since September 2024, with his final stay taking place at Cocoon House East. During that time, Diego faced challenges finding a consistent family connection, as his legal guardian was living out of state and unable to be present.

With determination and collaboration with our Outreach Team, Diego was able to reconnect with an uncle who stepped in to provide long-term, stable housing.

Since finding stability, Diego is attending school more consistently and making positive, healthy choices for his future.

Jordan came to Cocoon House East for their very first shelter experience. Before that, they had been staying with a family friend — but when an emergency guardianship ended, Jordan needed a safe place to turn.

During their time at Cocoon House, our team supported Jordan in planning next steps while their mother worked to regain guardianship and move into a place where she could support them. When Jordan’s time at shelter ended, Cocoon House helped ensure a smooth transition to their next placement.

Following an aftercare check-in, we received wonderful news: Jordan’s mom had regained guardianship, and they were now living together.
